D.O.G. GmbH developed with ErrorSpy the first commercial quality assurance software for translations in 2003. Decades of experience in the translation and localization industry led to the development of this program. ErrorSpy is used to support the work of the reviser. Translations are automatically checked for a number of characteristics. The reviser receives a report with potential errors that it must review. At the same time, translations can be evaluated using ErrorSpy. Using objective and freely configurable criteria, ErrorSpy automatically generates an evaluation of the translation as well as an error report. The evaluation is based on metrics from the SAE J 2450 standard.

How does ErrorSpy work?
The procedure is relatively simple: The file to be checked is read in ErrorSpy. The reviser defines the checking criteria and ErrorSpy reports all sentences containing potential errors.
ErrorSpy can be used to check a range of features:
- Terminology check: Using bilingual terminology, ErrorSpy checks whether the translator has adhered to the terminology specifications. One may justifiably ask how one reviser can possibly ensure adherence to 1000 different terms in a 200-page document. Thanks to ErrorSpy, this is no problem. In addition, you have the option of taking several forms of a word (e.g. genitive 's') and several translations for one term into account. ErrorSpy checks the terminology in both directions. It therefore checks whether a term found in the target language also has an equivalent term in the source language.
- Typographic check: ErrorSpy checks whether the typographical characters are correct and conform to the country (e.g. quotation marks). It also checks for misplaced spaces and missing brackets.
- Consistency check: ErrorSpy remembers all sentences or segments that are identical in the source language. If the translations for such segments differ, these differences are reported to reviser. With the new partial consistency check, ErrorSpy now also checks whether similar sentences have been translated similarly.
- Number check: Numerical errors are among the most serious errors. ErrorSpy not only checks whether numbers in the source and target languages are identical, it also checks whether the decimal points correspond to the specification and whether certain types of numbers are formatted correctly (e.g. dates or telephone numbers).
- Completeness check: ErrorSpy checks if everything has been translated. You can define the threshold for translations that are too long or too short and display segments that are unusually long or short. In addition, ErrorSpy can recognize sentences that were forgotten to segment when working with a translation memory system.
- Tag check: Many file formats contain tags. These tags may be deleted, damaged or moved during the translation process. ErrorSpy reports all segments that contain tag errors. Furthermore, ErrorSpy offers the possibility to exclude certain tags from the check. For example, the reviser can exclude a tag for the conditional separation of a word from the check, since such tags often disappear in the translation.
- Acronym check: Another source of error is incorrectly used acronyms. ErrorSpy offers the possibility to define acronym patterns (e.g. an order number) and to check if they match in both languages.
- User-defined checks: If you want to carry out special checks, you can define them using regular expressions. You can save these definitions under a name of your choice and reuse them.
- Automatic corrections: ErrorSpy has an integrated automatic correction function for certain types of errors. Thus, ErrorSpy can automatically correct user interface terms in software documentation if they are tagged as such. This is particularly useful for extensive software projects that are still being developed up to the last minute. ErrorSpy can also automatically correct certain typographical errors or consistency errors. The corrections are logged and can be reversed at any time.
Brand new: the context check
ErrorSpy is the first quality assurance software to offer context checking. Many terms have to be translated differently depending on the context: capacity, output, container, etc. These can be homonyms (same words with different meanings) or contextual synonyms. With the help of relations stored in the terminology management system LookUp, ErrorSpy checks whether the translation fits the context.
Greater safety and quality
No human can perform such extensive tests accurately and quickly. With ErrorSpy, every reviser can rest assured that he or she has not overlooked anything. This is an enormous advantage, especially for large documents that must be processed to tight deadlines and sometimes by a team of several translators.
Which file formats are supported?
ErrorSpy imports text files that contain both languages sentence by sentence (source sentence and translation separated by any separator). You can also check your translation memories in ErrorSpy, as well as Trados SDL-XLIFF files and TMX files, Memsource, Transit XV, Across or XLIFF files.
As a source for the terminology check, ErrorSpy can import different file formats: Excel, CSV, Multiterm, TBX and of course terminology from the terminology management system LookUp.
Translation evaluation and reports
Up to now, it has been difficult to create error reports and objectively evaluate translations. Due to the time involved, many companies therefore refrained from giving their translators feedback on the quality of the translation. Based on self-defined criteria, ErrorSpy generates an evaluation of the translation within seconds and generates an error report that can be sent to the translator. Thus, valuations are fair, objective and comprehensible.
