Your translation agency for technical documentation

It is particularly important that technical translations are both technically and linguistically correct. The reason is that incorrect technical translations of operating instructions can lead to erroneous operation of machines, inadequate treatment of patients, or wrong requirements in information technology, which can have legal consequences or even cause physical damage.

Examples of translation issues

Technical issues are difficult to translate without background knowledge. This is shown by some translator queries:

Technical texts suitable for translation

Technical texts are usually written by authors who know the products inside out and can even see and touch them. Technical translators must use this information to understand how these products work and which appropriate technical words and terms to select in their native language. Is the German “Spannvorrichtung” about clamping a part in a vice or tensioning by means of a belt? This influences the selection of the appropriate technical term.

Texts that are suitable for translation use clear and precise technical terms (e.g. not just container, but gas container). They avoid complex sentence constructions and have a uniform standardized sentence structure, which applies in particular to warnings, cautions and instructions.
The draft standard DIN 8579 – Translation-oriented writing – Text production and text evaluation provides useful recommendations for translation-oriented technical texts from the perspective of technical translators.

Technical integration and file formats

We deliver technically and linguistically flawless files that you can import directly into your content management system. Hereby you achieve considerable time and cost savings due to the omitted preparation effort.
The data format that we process most frequently (XML format) originates from the major CMS and editorial systems as well as PIM systems: TIM-RS, Quanos Schema ST4, COSIMA, Noxum and GDS docuglobe.

.

The most common desktop publishing (DTP) data we supply are: InDesign and FrameMaker. Of course, we also handle word processors, MS Office files, as well as special text typesetting formats such as Latex.
If you use translation systems yourself, we are compatible with the most common translation programs on the market. We have TM systems such as Trados Studio, memoQ, Across, MemSource, STAR Transit.
You can import the completed translations directly into your system.

Our process for technical translations

Short learning curve: How quickly can a new translator get up to speed? Some clients are concerned that new translators are unfamiliar with their products and terminology, causing more work initially. While it is true that every company uses a particular vocabulary and terminology, D.O.G. as a technical translation agency has developed and refined procedures over many years to get up to speed quickly on new topics.

.

In the case of a long-term cooperation with D.O.G. GmbH, we can evaluate large collections of available information and documents before starting the translation, so that the terminological basis that best suits your company can be built up as quickly as possible. We have standard procedures for this and also use our own special technologies. Thus, we can guarantee a very short familiarization period. To build up your terminology, you can also use LookUp, the terminology management system we developed ourselves.

Project management for technical translations

You simply place your order by e-mail or log into our customer portal. You tell us your requirements and receive an order confirmation.

Our project managers check the texts and requirements for feasibility and, if necessary, clarify some open questions with you, such as the desired language variant, if applicable.

Our translators receive the texts to be translated with reference material and terminology specifications if you have already built up lists of technical terms or specialized vocabulary. If necessary, the technical translator will clarify particularly difficult text passages with you.

Our approval process for technical translations provides for quality assurance (translation according to the four-eyes principle, in accordance with ISO 17100) by experienced reviewers after the translation. If necessary, there is an additional reviewer or proofreader. After that, the quality-checked technical translation is delivered to you.

Requirements for technical translators

For this reason, the creation of high-quality technical specialized translations requires extensive specialist knowledge and knowledge of the technical vocabulary customary in the industry. Translators who are familiar with sensors, feelers, encoders, transducers or converters will most likely not use the correct specialized translation in their native language.

Many standards that affect the work of technical writers are also relevant for technical translators. For example, DIN EN IEC/IEEE 82079-1 VDE 0039-1:2021-09 on the creation of usage information (instructions for use) for products. It explicitly states that usage information for products involves “specialized translators, localization and terminology specialists.”

That is why we at D.O.G. have a strict and proven qualification process for selecting our technical specialized translators, who are exclusively qualified subject matter experts and have the necessary technical expertise (e.g., through a continuing education course). Most of them are members of the German Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (BDÜ). Several of our technical translators are also members of the Gesellschaft für Technische Kommunikation e. V. (tekom) or professional associations such as VDMA or VDI.

Terminologiemanagement für technische Übersetzungen

Terminology management for technical translations

In technical terminology, there is often more than one way to name a technical term: operator panel, control panel or controller panel. In German this is also the case: Bedienpult, Steuerpult or Bedienungspult. Therefore, systematic terminology work is necessary to ensure consistency of terms and thus uniformity of technical vocabulary in all translated languages.

For this reason, we offer our customers the opportunity to work together on building their own central online company terminology. For this purpose, we mostly use LookUp, the system for terminology management from our in-house development.

Terminology work is also teamwork. The know-how of all those involved in the translation process, such as technical editors, corporate communications, export department, training department, can be used here, and terminology can be recorded and used quickly. The workflow module of LookUp is particularly suitable for this purpose. Through this module, collaborative terminology work can be controlled and tasks can be sent directly to translators.

Quality standards for technical translations

D.O.G. GmbH is a translation agency audited and certified several times according to ISO 17100 (successor of the old standard DIN EN 15038). The professional qualifications of the translators and internal staff are continuously checked.

Only specialized translators with technical know-how are used, who translate into their native language and have appropriate experience or required certifications for technical translation. They have been working for us for many years, some even since the company was established more than 20 years ago.

All our specialized technical translations are proofread by our specialized proofreaders under the dual control principle. Proofreading, editing and revising ensure the high quality of all technical translations!

Machine translations with subsequent post-editing (post-editing) are carried out exclusively in consultation with our customers and are corrected by experienced post-editors in accordance with ISO 18587:2018 (post-editing)

Confidentiality and secrecy

It goes without saying that we treat all documents provided to us as strictly confidential. All internal and external employees of D.O.G. GmbH are contractually bound to secrecy. Likewise, we can offer you the signing of a non-disclosure agreement.

The issue of cyber risks from translations should not be underestimated and is particularly important to us. Some texts such as contracts, patent applications require additional security measures such as encryption of the texts. We discuss and agree these measures (e.g. determination of the encryption method) with our customers.

FAQ
Some of the issues related to technical translations
What is a technical translation?

A technical translation is the specialized translation of technical documents from a source language into a target language. It is not only about translating words, but also about transferring technical facts into the target language in a precise and understandable way.

What is the cost of a technical translation?

The total cost of a technical translation mainly depends on the number of words to be translated, the combination of source and target language, the subject matter and the desired delivery time. Compare the costs of a technical translation and get a free quote from us!

How fast can you translate technical texts?

Just like technical writers, translators need sufficient time for research and for quality assurance of their work. Sometimes, however, things have to be done very quickly. We can form teams of translators, work on weekends or use machine translation + post-editing in consultation with you.

How can technical translators ensure consistency across multiple translated documents?

There are several ways to do this:
1) Using a glossary in multiple languages with the terms that translators should use.
2) The maintenance of a style guide with rules and specifications for different aspects of translation (style of instructions, spelling of products, etc.).
3) The use of translation tools that store each translated sentence. This allows previously translated phrases and sentences to be reused and used consistently in all documents.

How do translators understand the technical meaning of special terms?

Translators can understand the technical meaning of technical terms by researching the terms in reliable sources, such as technical dictionaries and relevant professional articles. In addition, translators can communicate with subject matter experts, engineers, or developers to ensure that the technical terms are translated correctly. Finally, translators can use translation memory software to store and reuse previously translated expressions and phrases to ensure that the same terminology is used in all documents.
