Technical texts suitable for translation
Technical texts are usually written by authors who know the products inside out and can even see and touch them. Technical translators must use this information to understand how these products work and which appropriate technical words and terms to select in their native language. Is the German “Spannvorrichtung” about clamping a part in a vice or tensioning by means of a belt? This influences the selection of the appropriate technical term.
Texts that are suitable for translation use clear and precise technical terms (e.g. not just container, but gas container). They avoid complex sentence constructions and have a uniform standardized sentence structure, which applies in particular to warnings, cautions and instructions.
The draft standard DIN 8579 – Translation-oriented writing – Text production and text evaluation provides useful recommendations for translation-oriented technical texts from the perspective of technical translators.

Requirements for technical translators
For this reason, the creation of high-quality technical specialized translations requires extensive specialist knowledge and knowledge of the technical vocabulary customary in the industry. Translators who are familiar with sensors, feelers, encoders,transducers or converters will most likely not use the correct specialized translation in their native language.
Many standards that affect the work of technical writers are also relevant for technical translators. For example, DIN EN IEC/IEEE 82079-1 VDE 0039-1:2021-09 on the creation of usage information (instructions for use) for products. It explicitly states that usage information for products involves “specialized translators, localization and terminology specialists.”
That is why we at D.O.G. have a strict and proven qualification process for selecting our technical specialized translators, who are exclusively qualified subject matter experts and have the necessary technical expertise (e.g., through a continuing education course). Most of them are members of the German Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (BDÜ). Several of our technical translators are also members of the Gesellschaft für Technische Kommunikation e. V. (tekom) or professional associations such as VDMA or VDI.

Terminology management for technical translations
In technical terminology, there is often more than one way to name a technical term: operator panel, control panel or controller panel. In German this is also the case: Bedienpult, Steuerpult or Bedienungspult. Therefore, systematic terminology work is necessary to ensure consistency of terms and thus uniformity of technical vocabulary in all translated languages.
For this reason, we offer our customers the opportunity to work together on building their own central online company terminology. For this purpose, we mostly use LookUp, the system for terminology management from our in-house development.
Terminology work is also teamwork. The know-how of all those involved in the translation process, such as technical editors, corporate communications, export department, training department, can be used here, and terminology can be recorded and used quickly. The workflow module of LookUp is particularly suitable for this purpose. Through this module, collaborative terminology work can be controlled and tasks can be sent directly to translators.
